The Michigan Stone – a productive Yellow Sally Stonefly

Created by Paul Young likely sometime in the 1940s, the Michigan Stone is an imitation of the small Yellow Sally stonefly commonly found in many eastern waters. From Mike Valla’s “Tying the Founding Flies” from 2015, the Michigan Stone is a simple Yellow Sally dry fly imitation tied in a #16-18. This is the 15th pattern (of 21) featured in the book.

  • Hook: #16-18 dry fly
  • Thread: Yellow
  • Rear Hackle: Grizzly
  • Body: Yellow rabbit (or any yellow)
  • Wing: Fine, natural deer hair
  • Front Hackle: Grizzly
